To heal dysfunction, from a HOLISTIC perspective, we are a bodymind—as body and mind are an entwined unit. So, to heal any dysfunction, we must engage (i.e., heal) both body and mind. Quickest positive healing impact typically results from initially attending to the body, and thereafter approaching the mind. Why? The greatest density of stagnant energy is held in the body. The brain/mind holds energy of less density (greater subtlety). So, in the name of greatest efficiency, we can move the greatest quantity of energy by initially approaching the area of greatest density of stagnant energy (blocked physical and emotional energy) – i.e., by approaching the body.
Emotion is the body’s response to thought. What does this mean? From a holistic perspective, emotion is a bioenergetic response in the body that occurs in response to mental thought. For example, if we see that a brown bear is about to chase us, the mind registers a thought that we’re about to be chased by a bear. The mind’s thought is transcribed to the great endocrine glands which, in turn, secrete specific hormones into the bloodstream … which immediately travel to the internal organs and remainder of body – telling the body to be ready for fight or flight (wherein the latter course of action is advised!). The brain also sends messages to the body via the nervous system which activates the motor neurons for imminent action. Specific hormonal messages that reach specific internal organs communicate disparate messages to each organ. The liver responds with (and stores the bioenergetic template of) anger. Lungs store sadness. Kidneys store fear. Spleen, pancreas and stomach store worry.
So, rather than initially talk about the thoughts which we are feeling … a faster sense of release of stress is achieved if we initially move the body … which serves to massage the internal organs and cells of the body – accelerating release of toxins (physical and emotional) from every cell in the body. Similarly, drinking water helps to release cellular toxins – as emotional and physical toxins are water-soluble. Other activities help to release stress.
A recommended sequence of activities follows:
Engage in the following listed activities—on a daily basis—preferably for at least 90 days. For quickest impact, engage the following activities in sequence.
- Drink Water. Drink 2 liters of water per day—as toxic byproducts of stress, including stagnant emotion, are water-soluble and thereby dissolved. Drink water throughout the day. The vast majority of people are dehydrated. Dehydration causes toxins to build up in cells, leading to physical (and mental) disease and dysfunction. Drink drink drink (water)!
- Focused Breathing. For example, yogic breathwork, including alternate-nostril breathing for a few minutes, then abdominal breathing with every waking breath. (Focus on the breath vitalizes energy systems and transcends the distracted/scattered thoughts of the profane monkeymind. Examples of focused breathing are described in detail in Voice of the Soul: A Call to Action.
- Work out while feeling real-time emotion(to release stagnant emotion). Holistic (unified bodymind) theory proposes that specific emotions are bioenergetically processed and stored in specific internal organs. For example, anger is stored in the liver; sadness is stored in the lungs; worry is stored in the spleen, pancreas and stomach; and fear is stored in the kidneys. Physical movement causes the internal organs to move, twist and thereby release stagnant bioenergies (including emotion) from the body. Note that 20 to 30 minutes of cardio exercise is recommended at least three to four times per week, over the course of 12 weeks. Yoga practice may be a substitute for cardio exercise, given a disciplined yoga practice.
- Create using your primary mode of expression (movement, visual art, or music) while feeling real-time emotion. Creativity is a powerful self-healing exercise. Why? Because when we create—if done so while feeling real-time emotion and, especially, if aligned with our primary mode of creative expression, we instantly and directly access and impact our subconscious mind and core energetic template.
The five senses are a portal to the subconscious mind (core energetic template). When we express or receive via the five senses, we immediately and profoundly influence the subconscious mind. In fact, each of us is born an innate dancer, artist, or musician. When you were a kid, did you lose track of time more so when moving (sports/dance), creating visual artwork, or creating music? The answer to this question indicates your primary mode of creativity (with regard to sensory expression and reception).
So, if for example you are a born-artist (as determined by the aforementioned question), you can most efficiently relieve stress by 1) drinking water, 2) using focused breathing, 3) working out, and then 4) creating visual artwork (or receiving visual artistic energy by looking at artistic or natural beauty). You may notice that #3) above specifies working out (while experiencing real-time emotion) to release stress (including stagnant energy/emotion. Movement precedes visual or audible expression/reception as a prescription to release stress. Why? Again, as movement moves the internal organs, which physically releases stagnant energy from the organs. Thus kinesthetic movement is the initial (default) creative activity engaged to release stress.
- Stimulate the physical senses [that were not utilized in 3) and 4) above]. The visual sense (if not your primary mode of expression/reception) may be employed by sketching/painting your emotions on a pad of paper, using your non-dominant hand. The audible sense may be employed by singing (or playing drums or an instrument) with regard to what you’re feeling in the moment. The olfactory sense (smell) may be influenced using aromatherapy.
- Focus on sacred geometry while feeling real-time emotion(and using body-centered breathing).
- Sit in stillness meditation (especially following a rigorous physical workout/brisk walk, etc.).
- Talk about your feelings, journal your feelings, consult a shrink, etc. to change mental patterns.
