How to Find Your Life Purpose (And Service): Live a Purposeful, Meaningful Life

The thinking mind

The scattered monkeymind

is the enemy

For eternally shall it be distracted

By its obsession

With pursuit of certainty

Which does not exist.

Rather than guide us to

Our core life purpose and service

The monkeymind bull-rushes us

Through a lifetime maze

Of trial-and-error interactions

with people, objects and events

Which distract our focus

Away from a direct path

Of self-discovery.

If the thinking mind was profoundly intelligent

You would already know

Your life’s true purpose and service.

The answer to this riddle

Discovery of your true life purpose and service

Is readily accessible

But only via the inner voice

The whisper of intuition, dreams and synchronicity.

Your thinking mind will not reveal the answer.

Your inner voice will.

So the question becomes

How do we access the inner voice?

Our core self knows who we are. In fact, when you were very young, you may have had a pretty good idea who you are. Then, if you’re like most of us, societal pressures beat your intuitive understanding of who you truly are, out of you. You parents, teachers, friends, friends’ parents, television and a multitude of other forces, influenced you to turn your back on what you knew to be true … and to be open to the values of society – rather than your own innate values, aspirations, inspirations and ambitions.

Certainly this happened to me! When I was 4years old, I had a recurring dream in which I would commute to elementary school via rowboat. So, in 2nd grade I told my parents I’d like to join the US Coast Guard. Their response – not an option. In 4th grade, after viewing the Monkeys on tv, I realized I wanted to be a guitarist. I would jump up and down on the couch while holding a tennis racket like a guitar. My parents were faced with a decision … whether to continually replace pummeled couches, or buy me an acoustic guitar. As guitars were much less expensive than couches, they opted for the latter alternative. I immediately loved playing guitar so much that after one week they bought me an electric guitar. This instantly became my life’s primary passion (a/k/a “life purpose” – that core creative activity which makes one’s heart sing). In 7th grade I realized that I wanted to talk to kids for a living (i.e., become a shrink).

Whereas I now serve as a tallship captain (ala vision at 4 years old), write and record music (3 cd’s ala vision at 9 years old), and practice holistic psychology/energetics (vision at 12 years old), there was a ten year period of time in which I walked away from my childhood visions of myself. Why? Because I was worried that I could not earn a living as a musician, boat captain or talking to kids. So, bowing to societal values, I earned a MBA and CPA. Whereas these are wonderful skill sets that have served me in business, pursuit of this direction was, arguably, a distraction from my core path.

Why did I finally decide to follow a path aligned with childhood visions? Believe it or not it was not a conscious decision to finally pursue living childhood visions of myself. Rather, my inner voice (subconscious) guided me to return to the career, hobby and services that I had envisioned as a child … the inner voice led me via intuition, dreams and synchronicity. Really!

A dozen years ago, when feeling particularly LOST, I made what seemed at the time to be a ridiculous decision … as I spent $10,000 of the $12,000 I had in the bank on … musical recording gear. Why did I do this? As pathetic as this may sound, I was soooooooo lost, having recently left a relationship, career, and long-time apartment, that I had nothing better to do than create a musical memoir. I spent almost a year writing and recording a cd. When the cd was virtually complete a couple interesting things happened … a woman appeared at the door to my house – with the intention to buy a motorcycle that I was NOT selling (one of her friends mistakenly told her that I had a motorcycle for sale) – we dated then lived together for many years. A job offer mysteriously appeared. Life as though effortlessly became more palatable. Could it be that the process of creating the musical cd somehow indirectly affected my tangible life? YES!

The process of creation (and reception) – via the five physical senses – directly affects the subconscious mind and core energetic template. Especially expression and reception via your primary (born) mode of sensory expression (see the prior blog regarding Creativity: Dance, Music and Visual Art). Body-centered breathing also directly effects our core energetic template.

The Master changes the world without leaving her home.

The Master does everything by doing nothing.

What do these mysterious statements of the Tao Te Ching infer? That by raising one’s energetic vibration – via conscious activities – that one then kickstarts the law of attraction to do its thing … namely, to attract appropriate people, objects and events that will support one’s evolution (i.e. attracts props of experience that will inspire eventual mastery of specific life lessons that are as yet unresolved). So, the question is … what is conscious activity? See Voice of the Soul: A Call to Action for a detailed explanation (or Encyclopedia of the Tao: A-to-Z). Conscious activity is action (not thinking!) that engages expression or reception through the five senses, while feeling real-time emotion. This is a direct portal to the subconscious mind and core energetic template. Examples are working out (especially cardio), dancing, creating music and visual art – while feeling emotion. Also, body-centered breathing (as simple as abdominal breathing) help turbocharge core transformation.

Moreso, I suggest you consider challenging yourself with a 90-Day Program of conscious activity (and other healthy practices – such as drinking 2 liters of water per day, positive nutrition, etc.). Arguably, profound transformation at a subconscious level, takes at least ninety days to integrate. Challenge yourself. What begins as part of a 90-day program ultimately may become a healthy, conscious habit and, thereafter, lifestyle. You may find that you can change the world … without leaving your home – by maintaining a disciplined regimen of conscious activity.

In sum, what is the meaning (purpose) of life? To become self-aware. Integral to this is realization of your unique life purpose (highest creativity) and life service.

A hummingbird flaps it wings in Japan. A hurricane occurs in the Azores

When engaged in conscious activity we raise our energetic vibration. This stimulates energetic cause-and-effect that influences the entire planet … By being – engaging in conscious activity that raises our vibration, we do (i.e., effect the world) … Does this resonate with you? Do you believe this? If so, challenge yourself to a 90-day discipline of conscious activity. If you don’t believe this, challenge yourself to a 90-day discipline of conscious activity … and be amazed!
